Patachitra is a paragon art form of all art forms that the people
of Orissa have developed over time. It
imbibes its true magnitude from the cultural and traditional values
of the land. In the Sanskrit language,
"Patta" literally means "cloth" and "Chitra" means "picture".
Pattachitra is a traditional painting of
Odisha, India. These paintings are based on Hindu mythology and
specially inspired by Jagannath and
Vaishnava cult. The traditions of pattachitra paintings are more
than thousand years old. All colours
used in the Paintings are natural colours, fragrancy and fresh. The
Patachitra style is juxtapose of folk
and classical elements but is more inclined towards the folk forms.
Pattachitra style of painting is one of
the oldest and most popular art forms of Odisha. Pattachitra is a
painted done on canvas, and is
manifested by rich colourful application, creative motifs and
designs, and portrayal of simple themes,
mostly importantly in depiction of a story.
